Romeo and Juliet by william Shakespeare Romeo
     "A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
the sun, for sorrow, will not show his head: go hence, to have more talk of these sad things; some shall be pardoned, and some punished: for never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo." -
(Friar Lawrence) Act 5, Sc 3

Undoubtedly one of Shakespeare's finest plays, Romeo & Juliet tells the timeless story of innocent love struggling to exist in a world torn apart by conflict. By placing the action in a contemporary setting and energizing it with a dynamic score, Long Overdue have sought to return to this story the impact and power taken from it by time and romanticism.
Long Overdue give new strength to Shakespeare's assertion that 'Never was a story of more woe; than this of Juliet and her Romeo'.

A large proportion of our audience are GCSE or A-Level students and this production has been designed with them in mind. We've done everything we can to correct the misconception that 'Shakespeare's boring; it doesn't even make any sense'.
  • A wonderful cinematic underscore gives the audience an aural guide to the emotional undercurrents of the play.
  • The cast interact with DVD based characters, blending together live and pre-recorded action with astonishing fluidity.
  • Video clips, montages of news footage and voice over help to tell the story while anchoring the audience to the action with contemporary cultural reference points.
From the moment the opening music kicks in everyone in the theatre is gripped by this fantastic show until fate drives it to its tragic conclusion.

"Simply beautiful"

"...definitely the clearest Shakespeare I've ever seen."
"Even better than their version of Macbeth."

"Amazing!"

There is a huge amount of free educational support
surrounding the show designed to encourage schools to attend.

Workshops :  A month of pre-tour workshops gives students the chance to learn about the structure of the play and its characters. Members of our cast and crew will visit schools that have booked tickets for the show and lead workshops to give the audience grounding in the world of the play before they even set foot in the theatre. Although we can't visit all the schools we will try our best to visit as many as possible on a first-come-first-served basis.

Q&A :  A post show Q&A session allows the audience to ask questions about the show while it is still fresh in their minds. This invigorating and lively discussion really helps students to engage with the text; it also keeps the cast and crew on their toes!

Teacher's Packs :  We provide each school with a Teacher's Pack containing lesson plans, a glossary of theatre terms and ideas for follow up work plus much, much more. All our packs are authored by our Education Officer, Claire Nias, who is also Head of English at a local secondary school.

Web forum :  Via our website, we offer a post-tour web forum to deal with any questions that arise from the workshops, performance or Teacher's Packs.
